The BEST soul food!!!!! Our tour guide from Seretha from the Plantation/Island Tour recommended this place. I had the smothered pork chops which I was told is a signature dish. It was soooo good. My friends had the blue crab and shrimp which was so good that we had to go buy the batter as soon as we left the place. I also tried the red velvet cake which was moist and not too sweet. Every dish we tried was great,- collards, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese and don't forget the cornbread. The service was excellent and the owners came out to meet us and took pictures. They were super sweet. Definitely stop by if you're in town!

Exactly what I was looking for! I ordered the ribs special with a side of Mac-n-cheese and veggies...no way you could finish that dish in one sitting. My boyfriend got the shrimp plate (lightly breaded shrimp) with red beans and rice...two thumbs up. Huge place, with room for your whole family, and very friendly service.

Great place! I've been to MJ's three times in the last month or so. I've been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and all were fabulous. The fried chicken is very good, the mac and cheese is incredible, and the greens are some of the only greens that I will eat. I'm in St Helena a few times a month and will visit MJ's at least once on each visit there.

This is a family owned and operated business specializing in soul food. It's about 2 miles from the beach and a thousand times better than Shrimp Shack. Service: Impeccable. The family is sweet and the cooks (who are two momma's) are absolutely delightful. They did everything to make sure that we were satisfied and happy. Food: We ordered the fried shrimp and the crab and shrimp rice. The shrimp was definitely fresh and the batter was really good, not too much and not too salty. The homemade tartar sauce complimented the shrimp very well. The rice was not dry and had a mild shrimp flavor. THE CAKE WAS HEAVEN. It looks like cornbread with drizzle but looks can be very very deceiving. It was moist, slightly warm and if I weren't in public I would have licked the drizzle from the inside of the bowl. They are a little over a week old so the sign still read Sand Dollar something? When we visit Beaufort again we will definitely return.

MJ's is just plain good. Soul Food. St. Helena Soul Food. These ladies can cook. This is food the whole family can enjoy. Macaroni&Cheese, collard greens, Fried Chicken (and I mean seriously good fried chicken), pork chop, hamburger steak, butter beans... you gettin' the picture? Desserts that will make you fat, fresh green salads that will make you skinny. Outstanding shrimp and chicken salads. Very reasonably priced. Eat-in or call (843-838-2009) ahead and pick-up. If you're visiting of Fripp, Harbor, Hunting, etc you'd be smart to feed the Fam or even stock up the frig with these goodies. Doing a big family/group thing?...they cater and deliver. Went for early Friday dinner and was disappointed, already out of collards, oysters and scallops (in the country's richest farming and fishing community??) , by Sunday evening who knows what would be left on the menu. I ordered the $15 fried shrimp plate with 2 sides, at best maybe worth half that. The 8 tiny pond shrimp were over cooked and tasteless the coleslaw was plain and the pan cooked Mac and cheese wasn't too bad. My dinner companions didn't fair much better and we were in total agreement, never again.

MJ'S Soul Food is just the perfect place for a delicious home cooked meal.It's definitely food for the soul. The staff welcomes you just like a loving family would.I absolutely love coming here.I brought my grandboys to eat here and they loved it. So MJ'S will be the place we eat at when they come visit. Ten stars for MJ'S SOUL FOOD!!!

Instant coffee. Really?? Instant coffee? We stopped for breakfast and were looking forward to a delicious meal. Our first clue that breakfast might not be all that we'd hoped was the 2 cups of instant coffee, foam swirling atop them, that were set down in front of us. I could overlook the powdered creamer if the coffee had been real. My husband wondered if we'd ordered orange juice, we would have gotten Tang...The pancakes were, well, different. I suspect they were made from a mix that had dried blueberries. That would explain the odd grey color and the little nuggets of blue artificially flavored "things." I can still taste them and not as a fond remembrance. Syrup in a miniature Mason jar was a cute, if overdone, touch, but the top of the jar had holes in it like a salt shaker. The top had to be removed before syrup would pour. It probably would have been better to just bring out the bottle of Mrs Butterworth's. The sausage was just garden variety sausage from the local grocery. My husband's scrambled eggs were OK, as were the grits; the bacon looked pretty limp. I wanted to like this place. I really did. The ladies who worked there were pleasant to talk to, and the service was fine, if a bit slow, but really, we were more interested in eating than making conversation. I wish them good luck, but I'm afraid their days are numbered, if our breakfast is any indication. Based upon that meal, we won't be trying lunch or dinner...

If you ever want to experience southern hospitality, visit MJ's. The ladies of MJ's are not only great cooks but lovely people. As our waitress and cook told us, they put a lot of love in their food. My fiancé and I couldn't get enough of the cornbread, greens, and pound cake.

These ladies CAN cook! MJ's is soul food at its best. We've dined here several times, never to be disappointed. Everything is fresh - the fish, the shrimp, the veggies and the delicious desserts. All the ingredients are local and fresh. MJ's makes it all, down to the tartar sauce! I prefer the fish - whiting- and the shrimp lightly battered and fried. Great flavor, light, not greasy, just delicious. My mate prefers hers grilled- also delicious and perfectly seasoned. The sweet cornbread keeps coming. Their shrimp gumbo is the best I've ever tasted. The place is neat, clean, and the service is excellent. The owners and staff are as sweet as the tea! We just keep coming back for more.

Love this place! Recommended by local state park employees, and am so glad they did. MJ and Susan are always in the kitchen creating fresh dishes with locally produced/caught food (in season). I smelled the corn bread before I saw it land on my table. The best I've ever had. Ordered the fresh whiting with collard greens, followed by a special treat of locally caught conch stew. Conch and rue, nothing else. Tender and perfectly seasoned. Ordered velvet cake to go - recommended by a frequent customer. These ladies are the best! Totally agree with Charlie B. Service Impeccable. Food fresh and not too sweet/salty. Looking forward to returning, especially for their one year anniversary in June. Connee B.
